Believe it or not I've started trimming secondary vines. Counter intuitive but there's a method to it.
My patch is on the smaller side at 750-800 square feet. The diagram shows the strategy � maximize root nodes while minimizing the average distance from those nodes to the pumpkin nutrient sink. Five zones total. The main vine runs up the center. Two super secondaries before the pumpkin and two after each get their own dedicated 125 square feet. Tertiaries grow off these � think of them almost as mini main vines funneling nutrients directly into the four nodes closest to the pumpkin stem.
First year trying this. We'll see how it works.
