I plant my mustard and get it as big as possible before snow, in spring around march 25th it gets tilled in and will fumigate for three weeks with amendments tilled in, plant hits dirt 4/20. I also soil drench fungicide when amendments are tilled in. Ridomil works great for some when it does, Ranmans good stuff, as well as Presidio IMO and backed by University research in conjunction with bio fungicides like rootshield which give an extra 10% efficacy to 85% I believe. Oh the mustard- mix some winter rye with it for carbon and till in spring. Both cold hardy and will germinate up to end of October. Rye grows in snow. : )

Get some good compost before you drop seed. Even a thin top dress is better than nothing. I like a lot- yds. 1200sq/ft -10yds compost-5yds manure , organic matter rose from 7 to 9% my patch, my soil test.....get that in now, then cover crop

Test and balance in spring- use Langley's calculator- good luck Chris! Follow recipe and cookies come out good, oh yeah another thing, it helps to get your minerals in now with compost. I use Azomite (10lbs/1000sq) but you do you, could be greensand, basalt rock dust, glacial rock dust,? Ect. - just use Azomite!

If you want to run your BORON around atleast 4ppm then you will have to get your calcium to atleast 4000 ppm range- calculator will set the balance but be prepared to get lots of gypsum, manganese, SOP, copper, and maybe some zinc

My approach is to feed the worms. Hopefully they will do enough tilling plus consume any diseased stuff. Probably a cover crop and solarize after that.

NY Grower, great stuff! I have mustard growing already (1ft tall) and did NOT add compost. Do you ever wait until spring to add compost or always do it in fall? I like hearing different methods.

Best in fall to allow overwinter amalgamation and help supplement the cover crop. It also prevents skewing the soil test as bad. I have done a topdress in spring after amending but it darkened my soil causing excessive heat in June which scorched tips and leaves so now I use a dusting of chopped straw to lighten the soil color and drop temps 20 degrees at surface.
