Here's a cross-section of the pumpkin stem, healthy and with no splits. What's interesting is that it shows the plant's massive vascular network, the main reason why the fruit can grow so huge.
All members of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae), including pumpkins, possess a unique anatomical arrangement known as 'bicollateral vascular bundles' where the xylem is sandwiched directly between two separate layers of phloem. The phloem is the green areas seen here.
