               I saw this method (not this tool) of letting roots get started and removing the hold-downs once they got going. NOT being critical, just wonder why not leave them in place for the duration? Either weigh, all that are pictured are very cool! eg

               I remove them because eventually the vines get thicker than the width of the staple. I will most likely leave them on the final 4-5 nodes of each vine just to add another level of anchoring.

               did the same thing with a 1" dowl rod and heavy duty hook screwed into the end.

               I use a plastic coathanger cut in half for this.  Never have to remove them although I tend to pull them out as I am burying vines.
