I've heard that some have been slow starters on the 2560. Both of mine this year were behind the 2-2447.1 and 2-2465.5 using the paper towel method to start. But one of the 2560's were second to pop through the dirt once put into the pots.

I would plant it... In my experience it is likely not going to matter in the end. I have had some good ones come from poor starting pumpkins. Just to be safe I would Plant it next to another alternate. That way if it does show a lot of mutant characteristics, you can always pull it and go with the other. That 2560 seed may be the "next" great seed. You may kick yourself if you don't give it a chance.

Neither Here Nor There

My 2560 is doing the exact same thing. At least 2 if not 3 days behind everything else. My 1885 Werner was much faster to germ, even being 3 years older.

What is wrong with it? Roots seem vigorous, what am I missing?

Looks like a mutant franken sprout. If you put it in a pot it may never break the surface. I would get a backup going now...

I kind of agree with Vince. Mutant Franken-sprout. It never really had a tap root. I’m going to double plant it with one of my 2301’s. Time will tell the tale.

I would start a backup but plant it anyway to see if it turns out okay. Due to its excellent track record, you should at least see how it looks in a pot.

So, can too many roots be a bad thing? I’m still confused cause it doesn’t look like a club footed root, just multiple roots.

It just looks very different than what is “normal” & it is very slow. My experience had been that different & slow are not good.

Most growers' seeds are not ever paper-towels-sprouted vertically and the roots have no 'idea' which way to g(r)ow. We've all been there with a right or left? which way? in traffic...the only thing that answers it is to go straight ahead and be the tap root.
It'll probably be a new PB. eg
Oh, yeah, actual reasons, ummm, just see here, and the one I trimmed the roots off (AND the tap root) of is STILL the best-growing of the two left, (one was disposed of, due to it being in a BAD experiment, lol) although not 'worth' doing the Diary update about it. This may prove that it is still that SEED that is more vigorous, without regard to its planting/trimmed roots' circumstances:
