How big of a problem are mice normally? I haven't had any problems so far but just wondering if it would be prudent to lay a few sticky traps around the patch.

They get bad this time of year if you use landscaping cloth. Best way to get rid of them is castor oil pellets. Just broadcast them around your plant before a rain and the mice run.

Would be a good idea.
Try spreading some castor oil(mole and vole deterrent)
or moth balls.

i have big problems, they nibble on my vines and cut some in half. Not good !

They can hurt the plant.
As Chris mentioned, they nibble on the vines too.
Maybe looking for water?

I haven't noticed any problems. I usually put them around the stump, vine going to the melon, and the perimeter. Been doing this for years.

I sprinkle Milorganite around mine and the mice issue does seem to be eliminated.
