            | ESheel31(team sLamMer) | Eastern Shore of VA | For the stump or the melon?i cover my melons with a loose sheet to prevent sunburn.
Have begun making a small hoop house though.
Sometimes you cover to keep critters away.
Last year,I was disqualified from the state fair because of a small hole in the bottom of my melon.
A mouse had started on it,and had only begun to scratch the rind, but created a "hole" nonetheless.
 Would have finished second.

            | Holloway | Bowdon, GA | Very. I wouldn't use a sheet. You need something that allows air flow to prevent rot. | 8/20/2016 10:00:20 PM |

            | Porkchop | Central NY | Even up here in NY? | 8/20/2016 11:40:15 PM |

            | Holloway | Bowdon, GA | I guess the risk would be lower in NY. A sheet might prevent sunburn but thats not the only reason for shade. Just like with insulation the air gap lowers the temp a little bit, prolonging maturity. More days more pounds. A blanket at night when it gets cool up there is also a good idea. Cool in the day warm at night. | 8/21/2016 8:08:20 AM |
