how many square feet do you generally want your melons to grow in? Also since I am preping the soil for next year now i was wondering, If i have heavy clay soil and i add about 3 inches of shredded leaves and maybe a little compost, about how many inches of sand should i use? Thank you.

Ashton, I gave my melons about 400 square feet this year. Some do it with 300 or less. In my opinion the best way to lighten the soil is organic matter. I believe good watermelons can be grown in heavier clay soils as long as they are not waterlogged.

add some gypsum also to help with the clay. 2 inches of sand & 2 of compost. add all this fall. till up & let it sit all winter. Soil test in the spring.

Can I subsitute shredded maple leaves for compost? We have about 50 full grown trees nearby. Thank you!
