How can I prevent this disease this year? Both of my plants had it last year. I'm not 100% sure how they got it but I have aphids every year so I assume it's from them.

Correct, its carried (vectored) by piercing sucking insects. Deter the insects from taking that first bite with permethrin bifenthrin or insect netting.

This is a killer (reverse pyschology) article if you (don't) follow his advice then I hope it gives you better results:

The other thing to look into is to figure out what species of plant in your area is harboring the virus as an alternate host. Matt D mentioned pokeweed as the host for the type of mosaic virus that he was dealing with. He recommended all removal of local pokeweed plants. He also used a special silver reflective wall around his patch to help deter insects.

You can easily detect it on Polkberry leaves. Tobacco from a cigarette can infect your plant with it.

Definitely easy to spot, just about half the pokeberry around here has it.

Big box stores work but just quite weak, hit em hard, don't want all that hard work ruined by a bug.

Man I hate that disease! I had it one time many years ago,, plant was gone in 2 months.

I don't wish this disease on anyone! At least with soil borne diseases you have something to throw at it.

I like what someone said above about screen or netting to keep the pests off.
