Hello folks it's been a long time since I've been on here. So much has changed since I first joined this site almost 20 years ago I think. There use to be a morning chat that a lot of folks participated in back in the day, like abbynorm, Lipumpkin(glenn) Tom bohica, etc. But I've been checking in here and there and never see anyone in the chat rooms?

I would like to get back into growing but so much has changed and I have so many questions...lol. chat was great for that.

Also anyone know if Dan Mckie is still growing?

Cheers, Devan

Devan.....many have aged out and moved on. Theres tons of new growers but chat is dead. IMHO its best to post a set time and day you'd like to establish as a chat time and sit and wait at that time....maybe trolling for chatters like this is the way to go?....glenn

Good to see you Greenthumb! Yeah, the chat isn't what it use to be and a few of the OG chat people have passed away.

We use to have some great morning and afternoon chat years ago!

Glad you're getting back to growing! It seems every other person grows 2000 pound pumpkins now! lol

Hey Devan and Glenn, seeing you guys posting here again makes it seem like we're back in the good old days. You grew some pretty orange pumpkins years ago Glenn. I recall your 603.5 Muller, 670 Daigle, and 940 Mombert offspring years ago. Are you guys still growing giant pumpkins? It's been about about 4 or 5 years ago since I've grown them myself. Mostly vegetables for me now. My green beans and potatoes did especially well this year. I also had a bumper crop of apples on the Frostbite apple tree. An excellent eating apple IMO, and quite winter hardy from what I hear. I think Fedco trees carries it, if you're interested. Fedco is in your home state of Maine Devan. The Frostbite apple is on the smaller side, and the taste is quite unusual. Some of the apples have the tendency to split near the stem end at least on my tree. For me this year I'm guessing about 30-50% of these apples had some splitting near the stem. For me it's also been biennial bearing the last few years, with a heavy crop one year, and very light to no crop the next. Maybe I could fix that with heavy thinning of fruit at the proper time, on the heavy years. I first tasted it I think back in the 1990's when it was known as MN447 at the University of Minnesota Applehouse. The taste blew me away! Here in central MN it usually ripens around early Oct. or later. So it's about as late of an apple as I can successfully ripen in this area. It seems to keep pretty well. I've eaten them around them around the first of Jan., and they still were quite good. The ones I've been eating out of the refrigerator lately seemed to have developed a more intense flavor during their storage. It's kind of tempting to give giant pumpkins another try with all the big orange monsters grown recently. Best regards to you both. Also to you too So.Cal.Grower, Ken. D., and the Borer. You guys have been around this site for a long time as well. I'm guessing Ken has been here at BP.com the longest LOL!
