Hello all I am wondering of the quality of seed that comes from a self cross.
Are there any examples out there of self-seeds that have produced heavy pumpkins, even heavier than their parent?
As we know generally speaking self-pollination isn't a good idea because of the possibility of two recessive genes and lack of genetic variety for improvement.
I ask because I selfed my 2469 Daletas last year and am wondering if it is something to consider growing this year.

Unfortunately, not many (2469 X SELF) results with pics yet on PumpkinFanatic, but if you believe in my comments @ the link above, you should grow your (1558?) - but if it's to be your ONLY choice, you'd better choose as you have been all along, lol. Terrific that you were right there for the Patons' tension prior to the weighing of the 2593.7; I had not seen that pic yet and they are showmen even at that stage of the game, lol---good luck---eric g

(good selfed lineage #1) x (good selfed lineage #2) should give the most vigor

I think the 2469 could be a good lineage to use. It was such a massive and heavy pumpkin it must have had some good genetics but getting those genetics into distilled upward into the next generation is going to be uncertain. Like all gambling there is always a chance it could pay off.

The 2469 is undisputedly the best 2624 offspring. While its production may have fallen short of expectations so far, we are seeing it emerge as a consequential seed in contemporary pumpkins. For example: 2183 Mendi, 1686 Stelts. Steve’s 1893.5 could be great too- 2nd biggest 2469 offspring crossed back with a 2624 that produced a 2174. Get one while you can... I’ve noticed that a lot of the Daletas 2020 lots at auction don’t include the 1893.5 for some reason.
