On the home page there is a banner about the world record 150 sq ft pumpkin. Where are the record placing stats for 150 sq ft grows? I am looking at going 150, and want to know how and where the records are kept. Does each state have a 150 catagory, or just GPC? Just curious. Thanks.

The ‘150 square ft. contest’ as it’s commonly referred to, began in 2013 as a friendly contest among a few growers in the ‘Morning Chat’ room one morning and limited to those in attendance that morning.

By 2014 many other growers had expressed interest in joining and Team-Pumpkin took the leadership in conducting what then became officially the “Team-Pumpkin 150 Square Feet Invitational Pumpkin Tournament”. An open invitation to all growers along with the rules and prize structure were posted here on Bigpumpkins.com. Team-Pumpkin continued the contest each year with minor adjustments through 2019.

Pumpkin weights increased each year as the growers learned how to maximize the return from a limited space. The pinnacle of achievement occurred in 2019 when John Butler broke the 1000 barrier to set the world record with a pumpkin weighing 1175.6 pounds. The same year Joe Jutras eclipsed the 1k barrier with an 1109 pound SQUASH. The 150 contest rules were color blind so both these world class growers are recognized as breaking the 1k barrier in the 150 sq. ft. pumpkin contest.

Team-Pumpkin has been the sole promoter/supporter of the 150 contest from 2014 through 2019. At no time has there been any involvement by the GPC. In fact the one time Team-Pumpkin requested anything from the GPC regarding the contest we were flatly refused. They wanted no part in it.

2019 was the last year for the “Team-Pumpkin 150 Square Feet Invitational Pumpkin Tournament”. Following that announcement Robert/Bob/bnot elected to continue the concept under his direction.

Hi LJ:
The 150 contest that Bart created (and bnot continued last year) will continue on next year.
Bob/bnot has provided all the 2020 entries so we can award this years winners. More news next year. Its a fantastic and fun contest that levels the playing field for everyone and challenges the skill sets of all growers equally.
