I have a 1/3 hp pump and pushes water through 4000sf of drip tape, so you could probably go even smaller than that.

Yes, a 1/3 hp or less will work. But there are other things to consider when using a sump pump. It takes a long time to pump enough water, do you have that time. Is the source going to drain when the pump is off? I had these struggles, finally saved the money to get a shallow well pump, by far the best investment I've made to grow giants.

I use 750 gallon per hour pond pump for 1200 square feet dialed back to 2.5 gallons per minute.

I should clarify , I use a 1/3 hp fountain / pond pump also, not a sump pump. Mine has an automatic shut off so if , for example, your mixing fertilizer in a barrel and running it through the drip system, it will automatically shut off when the barrel is empty.

seems like you might be (*nicely-meant*) overdoing the pump capability, as in does a drip tape take 40 PSI @ 1200 gallons per hour? you might be able to reduce the setting on the pressure switch, but, that might void the warranty, yada yada yada, and read the customer reviews - one guy said he tried it as a sprinkler pump and it kept overheating and shutting down so he had to get a different one - just a few thoughts; i do overhead whizzer sprinklers only, so, this pump'd be right up my alley! good luck anyway, and the next thing'd be to go to the nearest local 'used' category of Google locally and see what's available; 50-60 PSI and my $50 Daytonator runs great for two whizzers at once---eg

you need to take into account how far you are pumping and if its up hill

The pressure tank stores the water under pressure so the pump doesn't run the whole time I'm watering. Drip tape also requires a pressure regulator, the kits I bought come with them. I also run overhead whizzer type sprinklers, so have the available pressure is nice.
