Colo Springs CO

Curious what other growers plan to do with an early season snow and killing freeze on the way? Better cover the vines you want to clone anyways...I usually have propagated the 0plants I might want to keep alive, but this is a bit early in the year ! I don't know if its worth covering entire patch for a few extra pounds. Anyone going to try saving their season ?

Yup pretty much figure pumpkin growing in CO ends here soon, Oh well, at least we made it to September. 100 Tomorrow, then 36 for a low... Gotta Love It

Let the patches dry a bit then run some overhead irrigation & melt & wash away whatever comes down, as it comes down. It's way too early to lose everything.

Crazy isn't it. Near 100 hear tomorrow. Low of 30 on Monday and 26 on Tuesday. I can put a space heater in the greenhouse, but I know it only gives me about 5 degrees of extra warmth, so on Tuesday night I'm probably done. The pumpkin will keep growing off the roots alone I've found in the past. Foliar seaweed can help protect the leaves a little if it is getting around the 34 degree mark. Overhead sprinklers around the freezing low time (6:00-6:30am) can help as the water is usually around 60+ degrees this time of year.

Did that one year, had sprinklers on, made a complete ice sculpture of the leaf. Was for a few minutes the most beautiful replicate of the leaf in full detail....glizzsling in the Sun... then it was gone. And so were my leaves.

Last update I saw was 17 degrees as a low in Cheyenne. I think this means patch cleanup is a couple of weeks early.

Haha. A few years back I had two pumpkins growing and a hail storm came up. I told the wife I'll cover the one pumpkin you get out there and cover the other! She told me F&*#$@k you

Would a frost blanket be any good?

Or would covering them in poly and sealing it when it is still sunny trap enough heat to save at least some of your plant? Maybe even a few light bulbs under cover?

Our forcast is 5-8 inches of snow and a low of 27 that night.The weight of the snow will collapse my structure so i have to take it down or the snow will-Im screwed no My plant is screwed

I kept my small greenhouses up. I will be bringing them out along with my tarps. My structures have held up with 1 foot of snow. Thanks to my several failures, I have learned how to keep plants alive with snow. took me 5 years to figure it out. Hopefully all of the triangles hold up.

Crazy crazy weather. Colorado, Alberta, Newfoundland I don’t know how you do it. Hot hot Summer one day and frigid the next day, brutal, I complain about cuke bugs. Good luck.

Crazy weather. I don't think you Colorado guys get enough credit for what you deal with in a typical growing season. I would definitely rank Colorado as one of the more difficult environments to grow in.

I have snow pics before and after taking down the hail netting, not one single hail ball this year, tomorrow 100, low tonight 67. Spraying 10 gallons of kdl tonight....lol

Well Joes method sounded logical, so thats what I decided was the best course of action. It did not work very well for me, but it was quite entertaining to say the least.

I think mine worked. Won't risk it not working by opening and checking, but putting down 11 tarps and using 8 heaters with a combined 950 watts over the 600 square foot of plant I could save. I think kept it above freezing. Last night the lowest reading I could get was 34 when it was 31. Took 15 hours of work though and a ton of tears. Might be worth it. The leaves around the pumpkin were 38 when the temp outside was 31.

plant is alive and healthy under tarp. That is the 500 square foot for my large pumpkin. The bushel gourd 100 sqft didn't like the cold though.
