I know most of you are guys, so the answers may be interesting. But, have you ever cried over a pumpkin? Either one that didn’t turn out, or maybe you won a weigh off or beat your PB. Maybe weather killed your whole patch (I’d cry over that likely).

I have only seen it happen once that I can remember. I will not name the grower. If you pour your heart into something... it might happen.

Men Cry..I don't care what anyone says. Losing a pumpkin is like losing a pet. Getting a personal best or weighing heavy..getting a Howard Dill Award...watching a new grower get to the scale the first time

Yeah, I "almost" cried after losing my whole plant to root rot.

That would suck LJ, I worry about root rot a bit come sept as it can rain a lot and be wet for long periods of time. October is even worse.

Sub, your the only other gal I know of that’s said so. I know some of the guys have their other half’s who help out, so there’s been others even if I don’t know who they are.

It would also be nice to see more gals at the weigh-offs with big pumpkins. Not that there's anything wrong with guys at the weigh-off, great to see you all there!

Many times. First year my father stepped on my young plant and killed it. Second year my mother put my young plants out and they got hailed at. 3rd year fruit flies took out my plants. Fourth year hail took out my plants. Fith year I lost my best plant which was the 996 Haist Squash. I think yellow vine disease took it out. My second best was a month late and pollinated in late August ended up 73. 6th year a squirrel ate off my main vine at 5 feet out. I had 6 secondaries that ended up getting yellow vine disease. I ended up growing 2 other plants in a 10 X 4 area. One was 73 and other was 97. My diary is called 97 pounder because that pumpkin showed to never quit. I grew it with 8 leaves. My 7th year my best plant got yellow vine disease and ended up killing my 35 lbs pumpkin. That same year on the plant that grew my 177 pound pumpkin a person came through and ripped most of my plant out. To make matters worse a hail storm came through after my structure was destroyed. Ended up pollinating in mid august on a secondary. Last year was my first good year. This year I lost my largest plant to yellow vine disease. Earlier I dropped my 511 on the ground a day before planting. It was delayed for 2 years. Needless to say I have cried a few times.

When my mom was battling cancer a few years back, i promised her before i left this earth, i was going to grow a 1000 lb pumpkin someday in her memory, well that happened in 2016 and yep i shed a tear for her that day.

We dropped a buddy's personal best last year during the lift. I didn't cry outside. I did on the inside.

I lost a beauty in 2017 a week before the weighoff. I was in a funk for weeks. I do believe I cried then.

Its personal. We wait all season, from the end of the contest to the time we plant our seeds and baby that plant and young fruit the whole time. I have one patch and room for one plant in the one patch. If it goes wrong after the second or third week, there's no backup.

Tears are an expression of the hard work, anticipation and journey we are all on. Cry away.
