I’m away from the patch for 4 days and I’m just wondering how long you guys think you could go before burying the vine and still get an upper root to go. In past years I’ve noticed the top of the node often gets a hard white bump on top if left unburied for too long and at that point you’re stuck with just one on the bottom. I’m really trying to stay on top of things this year. I’m thinking it could go at least a week? Perhaps the vine could be 5 or more feet beyond a given node before burying and it will still go? What do you think?

I dont think there is one. Put some azos or rooting hormone on the node and bury away.

Our experience is that any uncovered taproot that sees sunlight, dies soon after.

I think moisture plays a part...if you run misters or you have high humidity you should be fine for 4-5 days....

Perhaps if a root starts and then gets fried, it’s dead. But if left exposed and the root never attempts to grow, you could entice it by burying it indefinitely.

I use indol 3 butyric acid rooting hormone powder on top of the little nub on top, then some azos and myco and cover the whole node with a soopy mud ball.

I agree with Royal Gorge, on a healthy plant in high humidity, I sometimes don’t need to bury the top root. It’ll turn the 180 and root by itself. You are seasoned and know this isn’t recommended, but it does happen.

I'm not sold on CloneX gel yet based on that picture from Matt since node 3 is the youngest of the three. I'd love if someone who is using CloneX this season would do a better controlled experiment, pick two secondaries, alternate node applications, and let us all know how it turned out at season's end.
