When do you folks do tissue tests? I've never done one before but would like to this year. I'll be pollinating in about a week, most likely, if that info helps.

If it were me, and I had the scratch, I would test right before pollination to see how close I was.. day 20 to see what draw there was during initial growth and day 35 to see what load was being put on the plant. Some growers have tested evey two weeks til September. Once you test a plant a few times you really get an idea of how your soil works with growing these. Hope this helps. Good luck jay!! I would only do one test and I would do it right before pollination. But then again, I am a cheapskate. When was your last soil test, because you need to look at both together to get the best picture possible.

If I could only do one it would prolly be day 30....assuming I knew what my soil numbers were and what I added in the spring. But that’s prolly because I’ve tested at day 20 and know what I’ll probably need to add before that. We send to western labs and they give the recommendations of what to ad per 1000 sqft. Kinda neat actually. Could really dial in.

Wolf, does Waypoint Analytical give specific pumpkin results on their tissue test? I went to their website and very little info on price, how to submit, etc. Maybe have to create an account or something?

Their website is not very good. They give recommendation for pumpkins, just not specific to Atlantic Giant. There is a submittal form to fill out and send with the sample on there, it's under resources at the bottom of the page. They are very helpful on the phone, so worse case, call them, they have several labs. I use the 1 in North Carolina

How do you collect and ship the samples? Where on the plant should you collect, newer leaves, older leaves, how many leaves to sample?? I obviously know little about this, but willing to learn and give it a try.

My advice has always been to call and talk to one of the girls at western labs. Mostly because they are really nice and understand those new to testing. I was a freekin wreck the first time I had to cut leaves...funny now that I look back at it...lol...I think it test number 75s...maybe 45 bucks?...don’t quote me though...call...western labs in pharma Idaho....They do all sorts of testing there but know all about what we are trying to do here with these big boys. They give the recommendations of what to put. Do it if you can squeeze it in the budget Lj...plant is looking good..keep up the great work

Marv - I did a soil test this spring, so I do have those results on hand. I’ve never done a tissue test before but I’m going to fire one off tomorrow, I use Western labs for soil so I’ll stick with them for the sake of continuity.

Jay, let us know how your tissue test goes. It generally takes 48 hours after receipt to get results. I have used Waypoint and it was cheaper but the results are geared to normal pumpkins so how do you know if your readings are really high? Of course if they are low for field pumpkins then you are going to be low for giants.
