This is my first year using soil heating cables. I placed my soil heating cables at a 1ft depth in 5’x5’ square. 6 inches down my temp was 36 degrees, 1ft depth it was 32 degrees. It’s been 5 days now and my temp at 6” is only 56 degrees so far. I’ve read some hit 70 after only a couple days. I’m using new cables 2 different brands with same results. Is my soil this far north just that cold, or is there a problem?
Thanks

Depending on the cable type & depth the time it takes to work the soil varies. I have two types on took 4 days to reach 65 degrees f the other is roof deicing cables it took about 12 hours to reach 84 deg f. The cables are at 8" the temperature monitoring is at about 5".

K thanks,
Also on the instructions with the heating cables it says they can burn the roots if they come in contact with the cables. Am I to turn them off after transplant?

I would turn them off when the weather is warm and the cables are no longer needed to warm the soil. I have never had any issues with burned roots. The roots will branch out and grow away from things that hinder growth.

I would doubt burning but they do get really warm and could cause other issues. You can hold them in your hand and feel the heat but it is not hat big a deal.
