Both 1911 and 1937 Urena's went flat vine. Any ideas why I think it's the temp swings 48 to 87 in the last 10 days. Any input welcome. Thanks Dave

No idea. But your diary this year has been great and the work you have put in has been amazing. I hope you find your answer.

i think there are concise differences between 'ribbon vine', AKA 'flat vine', and 'double vine' - there may be a third, but...

i had a seed/plant of my own last year that was 'flatvining' and there was no remedy for it since the vine itself was one 'channel' with two 'lobes' to it (no separation); a DOUBLE-vine (with two complete channels with a true, separating divider between) is remedied by waiting it out to about 6-8 feet or an established main vine is formed and then whichever one-half of the two is more advantageous as to angle, development or length is kept, and the other is merely carefully chopped off and the best is hoped for from there-on. eg

here's a post for you, and use the search window on the front page with

as the subject - hit 'enter' and enjoy - eg

I agree with EG in your diary looks more double than flat. Double is much easier to fix. Basically, do nothing. Most times they just grow out of it. If not then I again agree with above post you would just pick one side and cut the other one off.

I do believe it is caused by temperature flux. For instance, the plants in my unheated hoop houses got it last year while the houses with cables were fine.

Dave, really like following your diary, going to copy your water manifold. Totally inexperienced in this area. With just growing the two plants, would it make sense to start again? I know you have some great genetics there... eagerly following along, best of luck on your season

I don't worry until they're at least 8-10' out if they haven't corrected themselves by then.

I always got them when my soil was cool. Like under 68 f. Which can be often for me.
