As the site rep for the Elk Grove California GPC weighoff I’m getting a lot of questions about whether we will have a weighoff. Don’t have the answer right now. I expect that July/August will be decision time. We’ll just have to see what the situation is then. We are considering a backup plan where we have a certified scale at a given location and over the course of one day growers would bring their ‘kin by appointment to get a certified weight. No crowds, no public, just the grower. If this looks like where we end up we will discuss it with GPC and local health authorities before making any decisions. In the meantime try to work harder in the garden and grow big. Be safe. Be healthy. The world will return to normal.

I think that you are on the right track with a back-up plan. God willing and the creeks don't rise, I want to get a pumpkin to a scale. While individual fall festivals might not be open, I think weighing pumpkins by appointment is a fantastic idea. Growers would still get recognition and their official weights registered in memoriam with the GPC. The extra prep time that some growers have right now might lend itself to a toppling of a record or two.

I like the idea of a backup plan. I'm a teacher, and having to get creative about how I do my job in these crazy times. I'm sure weigh off venues can get equally creative with live feed virtual events to keep the excitement going! Hopefully it won't come to that, and we'll be back in business by the fall, but it's always pragmatic to have a Plan B.

Nice backup plan. Definitely think that by October everything will be much better. Good to have a plan though.

I will grow this year providing I stay healthy. How many I am not sure. I have everything I need here already.. Not worried in the least if any get weighed, just doing this because I love this hobby and it is a good distraction from whats going on in the world.. You all know if there is a scale somewhere people will hang around to see what the others bring.. We are dealing with human life here, is a weight really worth it ?

Nice back-up plan. Hopefully your local officials would approve that, if necessary.
