Does anybody know the year when the Howard Dill Award came into being. There is a discussion on that thread and people are wondering when it went from the local prettiest pumpkin to the Howard Dill Award? Need info like who, what pumpkins if you can.

Oldest HD Winner I have in my seed vault is from 2006. I am relatively new to growing ( 6 years) so I am sure there are older ones out there. Seeds are 746 Snyder 2006 and 691 Edwards 2006 ( two of many seeds that have been sent to me when I mentioned an interest in older seeds)

I think the OVGPG started calling it the "Howard Dill" award in 1995.

From Dave Stelts
The GPC started the HD award in 2005 & after spending many hours of spirited debate we selected the winner in 2005 & 2006. After that we concluded that such an honor should be given at the site level as there were far to many deserving pumpkins to limit to just 1 a year.

I wonder why I have two different seeds from 2006 that say they are HDWinners?

Many sites previously had a “prettiest” pumpkin contest but started changing the name in 2005 from prettiest pumpkin to Howard Dill award winner following the new GPC classification and a tribute to Howard. But the actual category of prettiest has been around at some weigh offs long before.

Andy wolf says there was what sounds like a GPC wide winner for a couple years before the first year of site specific winners. In 2004 or 2005.
