Before you jump to the conclusion that , oh it’s a Fox News link, try and google for yourself ‘Charles Lieber China’. All of the press has it…

Charles Lieber, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard, was arrested Tuesday on accusations that he made a materially false, fictitious and fraudulent statement about work he did for a program run by the Chinese government that seeks to lure American talent to China.
Lieber was paid $50,000 a month and up to $158,000 in living expenses for his work, which involved cultivating young teachers and students, according to court documents. He also received more than $1.5 million to create a research lab at the Wuhan University of Technology in China.
Lieber, who specializes in nanoscience and is principal investigator of Harvard's Lieber Research Group, has received more than $15 million in grants from U.S. federal agencies since 2008. He is required to disclose any conflicts of interest and money he receives from foreign governments.

Hey Bart, fox is the first place I saw it. You are right lots of news outlets have it now. WSJ: https://www.wsj.com/articles/harvards-chemistry-chair-charged-on-alleged-undisclosed-ties-to-china-11580228768 They guy is so stinking smart you wonder why he would make a such huge mistake. I only hope the truth will be revealed. The Chinese have been pilfering US technology for more than a generation. I'm withholding judgement until more is known...or there is a trial but it certainly looks bad.

I wonder if he applied his knowledge of nanotechnology to growing giant pumpkins. I believe nanotechnology has serious potential in the field of agriculture.

All while he was working on US DoD projects. If guilty, ought to be treated the same as a spy.

I'm a little concerned that the feds want to put somebody in jail that's not a government employee and/or isn't in military/national security.

$15 million in federal money gives the government an interest in the matter.

Today I was glad I have found this report, it shows a different picture and probably drives the public perception of this case into a somewhat better direction than other news´ reports do.

Just some thoughts which came to my mind in the context of this case (if it sounds like questions, it is sort of rhetorical questions). Charlie Lieber, in terms of his field of science and his role (as a giant, leader, head) can be regarded as an enormous strategical ressource. Just imagine what all of this nano-science could be good (or bad) for, what people could do with nano-electronics implanted into human bodies. Total control. Of course, many must be aware (and must have been aware) of his role as a strategical ressource. Hence, can you imagine that all of this (for so many years, so much cash flow, so much communication and travelling involved etc.) can actually have happened without others (who definitely look after all sorts of strategic ressources) taking notice?

As a scientist who is leading a field which can be utilized for so man good and bad things, would you set preferences for your knowledge to be used for GOOD or BAD things? How would a ressource, which is developing like crazy in all directions and being promising for all sorts of things, be supported and tolerated? How would a ressource, which is developing into one direction and which appears to refuse its exploitation into another direction be supported and tolerated?

Should not be judged until all the facts are in. Governments have been to known to falsely accuse people many many times.
The sad part is even if he is completely innocent or this falls into one of the many grey areas that exist , he has all ready been painted as being guilty and a huge percentage of people will always assume that it just couldn't be proven.
Every time Mr. Lieber does something good, this will be brought up.
