Thru the years, I have participated in many auctions and raffles. I have many seeds that I will never have space to plant. It seems that auctions that are for a weighoff that I might attend,I am more willing to spend. I think seed acquisition has averaged for me about $700 per year. My return from weighoff prizes has been over that. I have seen some individual seeds sell for a very high figure.
I like the auctions. I think the fact that the best genetics are available to any grower is a strength for this hobby. A few years ago, we were chatting about the over utilization of auctions by clubs. Some lots were costing more in postage than what they were selling for. Looks like this year, the number of auctions is less. Everyone is on a different budget. For a new grower, planting a triple digit dollar seed is not necessary.
What percentage of your return from the fall, do you put back into seed acquisition.

Even though we have access to many great seeds, we like to try to support our local club, by always purchasing a seed lot in their yearly auction. We also support the Orange Angel Foundation with a yearly purchase of their seed packs & with seed donations whenever we grew one big enough. We also support other groups by joining their club to get their seed packs & newsletters. Not sure what we spend per year, but it would be over $500.
