Does anyone else ever feel really down after your pumpkins are weighed and it's all said and done? I know it probably sounds kinda silly to most people, like it's just a pumpkin or whatever....but I dedicated quite a bit of time towards it and it sorta feels like there's a hole there now that it's finished.

The season never ends.

Cleanup, patch prep, cover crop. No slowdown until the snow hits and then do some reading, get seeds sent out, figure out plans for next year. Before you know it, it's convention / spring seminar time and you're mowing down the cover crop to try again.

Some top growers take whole seasons off. You can get involved with club or gpc... Once you are helping organize a seed sale or sending out a newsletter...that could fill the gap but yeah a farm in New Zealand would be nice???

Jordan - I feel your pain. Get yourself a grow-tent and geek out all winter long growing stuff indoors. There's even a winter indoor tomato contest. Helps fill the void after pumpkin season is over and during the long, cold winter.

I get it. Everything builds up and then you are just working dirt for the next season. I think one key is to maximize what you've got if you can. For years we've taken the pumpkin to local schools and events and they always appreciate that. Then there is Halloween:

Glad it's done & over with. Clean-up, rest & plan your next attempt at growing a new PB. After over 25 years of growing these things, it might be time to pull a Deletas & take next year off & work on improving our soil. Maybe grow something easy like tomatoes & maybe a BG.

Just what Andy Wolf said is what goes down here. Its 12 months out of the year, once the season ends the new season starts. I've been in the patch a few times a week since our final weigh off.:)
We don't get the snow he gets so we can tinker with stuff all winter!

I like to get counseling and some electric shock treatment before I start amending soil for the next season. It helps clear the mind for 100% commitment.

I went through that, but not for long. I have a different game plan for spring. I've reached out to some great people here in this community and everyone is more then willing to help me in any way they can. I'm starting a journal for next year and before you know it, the void is gone. I can't wait. Heads up Jordan it's time to plan ahead already. Good luck!

I am filling in the void by trying to clone my 220 DMG Baggs and 173 Baggs marrow plants that I was unsuccessful getting fruit from. I know that the plants won't be as vigorous growers but I want the genetics.

I'm splitting my time between deer hunting and patch cleanup. Already have one deer in the freezer (he won't be eating my plants next season) and most of the hoops for next year already set in place. Maybe some fishing if the weather straightens out. Actually, it is a little bit of relief as I'm not worried about bugs, pollination, weeds, weather, etc.

The next season, weather permitting is deer hunting. I very seldom shoot a deer. Its getting out in the bush. Listening to the dogs. Listening to the shots knowing where the sounds come from. Knowing what neighbour may have had some luck. You don't have to shoot something to enjoy the season. Plus the BS around the Supper table. Jim

I'm often disappointed at the end of the season, but only because I try to set high goals for myself. I'm also trying to keep up with some of the best growers in the world, so that can often make my accomplishment "feel" smaller.

The important thing is to turn those feelings into determination to do better, if that is what you want out of the hobby. I missed the same goal this year that I've had for the past 4 seasons, so deep down I didn't get what I was truly after. That said, I'm a lot closer than I've ever been and building confidence in my own decisions. There's plenty to be proud of this year despite the missed goal.

If you got to the scale this year, that's an accomplishment in itself.

Looks huge Dustin. Most of the top growers bang away at the numbers year after year. I think you have the right attitude. I dont know of any for whom it is was purely luck.

I think it was probably just the initial sudden change that really got me. A week later I feel alright. Thanks everyone for the replies though, I think finding a winter hobby is a good idea.
