Hi guys. i try to grow big and orange genetics for Halloween and with my limited ag growing experience it seems my fruit mature much earlier than some. At 50 dap or so my kins begin to develope cantalope nettint texture and turning to orange. When i look at other growers diaries most still have shiny smooth fruit still putting on good weight at this point. Is this environmental or just my weak growing tactics? I have around 160 days frost free here. I am looking for some new orange genetics to test this theory in 2020. Only having room for two plants this is important to me. Thanks in advance for any opinions

There are some lines bred for appearance. If you go with a line bred for 2k you are going to have to choose very carefully and test your luck. In my experience those bred for appearance will have thinner walls but will develop less canteloping.

I think canteloping is more of a genetic trait than anything else.

I have two pumpkins from the same seed that started cantaloping at day 30. It is the in the genetics.

Get in touch with Richmond Dave and try and score a couple of 1043 Chan seeds. Big, round, orange and smooth.

would i be correct to think growth slows down once cantalope texture starts to appear ? i would love to have a fruit still putting on wieght in september. perhaps i should be pollinating a bit later than i have been

Hey Aussie 78 I have a decent one growing at dap 54 and still moving the sticks it started to cantaloupe over at around day 30 and leaking sap everywhere I'm no expert but I'm still pooring the coals to it and it's responding so keep doing what your doing !!

I think the cantalouping starts when the walls start to get thicker than about 4". If you are going for weight it's a good sign. But some get thick and remain smooth skinned.

good info here as always. thanks guys. guess i will not look at cantaloping texture as a sign the fruit is slowing down just yet. i dont hate the look of the texture so long as its big and orange. not sure why but blossom end of the kin i just lost to split was very thin. pollination is my first guess
