I cover my pumpkins with wash baskets. If it doesn't work, then I cover mine with a screen cage that I make.

At my past house, I have not had much problem with rodents. I did not have to use any special extra caution. I have a feeling at my new house it will be a different story. I am curious also what works well. What is cheap and works is even better. I know I have seen in diaries, mouse traps arranged in a circle around a pumpkin. I have read about growing hot peppers and then making pepper spray for critter control..what else can be done?

Moth balls will keep them away. Space them a foot apart or so around the perimeter of the fruit.

Tuck them really well including the bottom with sheets. Get the sheets deep as you can daily underneath. Traps work depending on what rodents you have. I personally hate cats, but we have foxes that have been reproducing in our back yard since we moved in, and they’ve helped a ton. Don’t kill snakes you find, and I’ve always wondered about the big fake birds of prey mounted up in the patch.

I like the moth ball idea. That sounds financially beneficial. Thank you lcheckon...i might have a few more dollars for nutrients.

Hey I like the mothball tip...but I really envy the FOXES...I'll take all that would ever come into my yard...they are so neat...and they never ever hurt anyone that I know...except RODENTS...Then again I have been known to hear folks that they will kill bigger game.

I tell you for me the moth balls didn't stop nests under mine. But, by that point I was already overrun with field mice. I put out the large commercial bait boxes all around. Between my barn area close by and around my growing area I have ten or so. After some time the population is seriously reduced. I built covers for the ones outside or just keep them where the bait stays dry. Keep them with bait fresh this off season and you will see great improvement. Go online and you can get the boxes and one time eat poison. I have two barn cats now also which is even better! Good luck

Don't let mothballs tough the pumpkin. They could burn and damage the skin.

Coyote or fox urine will help repel rabbits and groundhogs.

I had an open box of mothballs in a trash can, mice built a huge nest right by the box

The rodent that causes me issues is the cat-sized gray squirrel. The only thing that stops them for me is poison. Regularly putting out poison snacks, all season long, or new ones will just move in. I've tried putting out peanut butter and shooting them, but there seems to be no end to how many will come. So for my money - poison them.

It sounds like mothballs are questionable for success. I have never heard of the dryer sheets. How do you use them?
