Looking for some advice. I have a thought. The main vine on my squash has never really slowed down. I’m guessing it’s 60+ feet long at this point. Squash is set on the main about 25’ from the stump. She’s only gaining 11 pounds per day and is mid 50’s DAP. I’m thinking about terming the main about 15’ past the squash to see if possibly more juice will go into the fruit? I will not be losing any secondary vines as there are none growing off my main 15’ past the fruit. I quit burying the main at around 15’ past the fruit because I was out of room. Anybody ever try it before? TIA

I’ve never done it but I like the idea and I may try it too. As long as everything else is terminated it should work. Maybe lol. Gonna have to be extra watchful for the ghost vines that will surely pop up everywhere once this is done.

I am still confused about the flow of nutrients. My advice would to treat it like a real experiment and try to learn from it. Tape the string or measuring tape in place around the squash so you are measuring the exact same spot and measure at the exact same time every day. Let us know the results or keep them a secret, maybe the knowledge will give you an edge.

K...string...flow of nutrients...got it....done it without negative results jay...and like orangeneck says and I’m sure you already know, the mystery terts will pop up...if you don’t get a jump in “ghost terts”, that could be a valuable observation...?....or measure and keep it secret...lol...gL

I cut about 20’ off this morning. There were no tap roots on the main that I cut off. Definitely be watchful for new tertiary growth to pop up. With the slow rate of growth on the squash it would be hard to see day to day increases. I’ll measure in a few days and post results here. Thanks for the advice.

At day 50ish and having a healthy plant, I would think that the gains should be at least twice what you are getting. I would be concerned with a nutrient possibly being low or out of wack. with all the rain we have had , that could be happening. Hopefully, it is getting thicker, and you are actually gaining more than it shows.
