Hello! My name is Kodi, I work at the botanical gardens in Oklahoma City. We're planning our annual children's pumpkin festival, and I'm really interested in doing an interactive section on giant vegetable competitions! The only trouble is, I can't seem to find any historical information on when they first started and where. Does anybody know, or have any similar knowledge/fun facts for me? I'd really appreciate it!

LLoyd Bright gives an account of giant watermelon history in his book. You can order it from his website. It is only 11.50 http://giantwatermelons.com/order.php

I would contact the Uk or other european growers for information about the rest of the giant vegetable world. Like baitman said they have been doing it for a long, long time. Two names that come to mind are Brad Wursten (dutch brad on bp.com) or Peter Glazebrook giantveg on here. You can contact them by going to their diaries and clicking on the envelope icon..

A FB menber said this I’m pretty sure it dates back to the days when English serfs had to rely on their own gardens for food after enclosure took away the commons. Village competitions were held for vegetables.
