I posted a pic on my diary showing a deep stem split on my 681 Gansert that extends into the fruit. I checked & it doesn’t seem to go into the cavity. We haven’t had unusual amounts of rainfall recently. The fruit is 33 DAP & is taping around 250 pounds. I dusted it with Sulfur, daubed the edges with Captan-Daconil paste & directed a fan on it. Should I try to fill this defect with my fungicide paste?
I can vaguely remember a story, I think last year, where somebody made some sort of incision to stop this splitting. Does anyone know anything about this?

What i would do, and remember this is only my opinion so ask others before trying is put a sharp knife in split and pull towards stem about an inch. It will open split up more and possibly take some stress of pumpkin. Wait for some other opinions before you try anything.

Thank you for the advice. I went all through Richmond Dave’s Diary. It was a great tutorial on how to take care of this splitting situation. Hopefully I can accomplish it as well as he did! Thanks for your email advice also, Dustin! And good luck with your stump/main problem.

Another thing I noticed is that the shoulders of the fruit are pressing on the main. Maybe that’s a source of the force that is resulting in the split? Anyway, I am getting a come-along to gently pull the fruit out. Haven’t done that before, so fingers crossed!

Steve, I agree with Norm,,,If you slice the stem from the split up towards where the stem meets the main, as the pumpkin grows it will spread the stem apart instead of the crack on the pumpkin. Be careful and do this slowly , because that stem is softer than you think and a good sharp knife will go thru it fast,,,The first time I was told this I was totally afraid, but in most cases, it does work. Here is a picture of one on which I did this http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=93164 ,,,Look closely, you can see the slice in the stem,,,Good Luck!!!

Don't plug the split with anything. captan on the crack surface and fan to keep dry. good luck with the surgery.I always thought it was the pumpkin shoulder pulling the stem apart instead of the other way around, but elongating the crack isn't gonna hurt anything and some people swear by it so go for ittttt.

This morning I did the 3 incisions Dave Chan had shown on one of his Pumpkins in his 2018 Growers Diary. I dusted them with Sulfur & trained a large fan on the stem. I need to move the kin back a little but it’s taping at 262 pounds. So I bought a cable puller/come-along & tomorrow afternoon we will address that.
Thanks everybody for all of the advice!
