Hi everyone. Every year I get these side vines that I call flower vines. The tip of the sidevine just look a like a bunch of flowers and the vine grows slowly and smaller than the other vines. This year looking over my main it looks like I only have two and they’re towards the stump. The rest look strong and healthy. I was wondering what causes these and if people cut them off or let them grow. I remember last year I let one grow and the vine was very thin and the leaves small. Thanks for the help Adam

Adam it seems those weird and week side vines happen when the plant is stressed a little and isnt growing 100% balls to the wall. Its a timing/momentum situation some grow out of it and make a decent secondary and some dont.So watch them awhile to see whether to prune or not.

Adam, it sounds like you are talking about stubby little "weirdo" vines that seem to only grow male flowers rather than an actual side vine that elongated and fills the patch with roots?
If so, I get those from time to time, usually at the stump, and I trim them off if they look like they're not going to grow normally. When pollinating, I like to choose the healthiest male flowers, and they normally never come from these clustered little flower nubs.

I grow in heavy shade (4-5 hours max direct sun all season), and get a few of these every year where a normal secondary should grow. I leave them because they will sometimes pop later in the season when I’m terminating other vines. They fill in space and still root at each node although a weaker vine. I would never grow on one. If really close to stump and don’t have a void in the patch, prune if you want.

I’ve had some vines do that close to the stump. I’ll give it a week if it doesn’t start growing I’ll terminate it. Then I will let a tertiary vine grow off the next good secondary and use that to fill in that open space.
