Just read the new GPC Newsletter. Great job Cindy. Very intrigued by the foliar application discussion and was looking for more information. According to what I read, we want to be careful with adding nutrients high in salt as they will prematurely age our leaves. Also, want to focus macro nutrients to oldest plant growth the help keep oldest leaves healthy longer. So my question is what products do we want to use that gives the most benefit without damaging leaves in the long run? In the past I have foliar sprayed cal- mag, seaweed, fish, companion, humic/fulvic, Holland’s bloom booster, compost tea along with insecticide and fungicides. Would love to hear what is working for everyone. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a good discussion, and yes Cindy’s write up was very informative. Their are aa few things I need to adjust with my foliar application. Last year was my first year applying a foliar feeding program. I did my application on top of the canopy early evening so they could dry before nightfall then I rinsed it off by forenoon the next day based on info that it’s hard on the leaves in full hot sun and they would age faster. So I may have to figure a way to apply under the canopy and skip the rinsing to give some of the slower nutrients more time to absorb. I also didn’t use a surfactant. My program consists of Urea mate because of the main nutrients plus it has all the micro nutrients a plant needs. I also add fish emulsion plus molasses. I haven’t used misting application so I’ll have to come up with that method as well somehow. I like to keep things as less expensive as possible due to lack of funds. Lol later own the road I’ll post what I come up with. Any suggestions are more than welcome the more help I can get the more successful I’ll be is my motto. Thanks

I'll let others weigh in here, but for any micronutrients, chelated forms are always best. Here is a link to a fairly straightforward explanation of chelation if you are unfamiliar with the term.

Hobbit, what was your foliar rate for the Ureamate? Thanks

Also, have you mixed Ureamate with any insecticides and/or fungicides?

Dustin, Urea mates magnesium, cobalt, copper, manganese and zinc are chelated DJW I was using 1oz per 4000 square ft every 3 days in a two gallon sprayer. I/4 of the 2 gal per plant. A little on the high side but I did so because I was rinsing it off the next day but I figured it still went into the soil anyhow. My soil is a sandy loam high on the sandy side and lacks organic matter. Therefore I have to water often so a lot goes straight through. My plants showed no ill effects and had excellent growth pattern. Utilizing the under the canopy method and leaving it on will probably take more calculations.

Sorry guys, i hate keep budding in and sounding like glenoma,Lol. But I’ve redone calculations on the Urea mate and I may have been putting on far to little. Somebody help me out here. Urea mate directions call for 5 lbs per acre every 7 days. It doesn’t have pumpkins listed but does have squash. I come up with 7.34 oz per 4000 square ft.

Hobbit, 7.34 per 4000 does equate to 5lb per acre. The label I found says 1 to 7.5 pounds for vegetable crops, and pumpkins are listed under vegetables on that label. So, that would be .37 to 2.75 oz per 1000 square feet. This is foliar. Fertigation (drench) would be much higher rates.

Ok thanks DJW, I think I’m going to increase mine this year then based on your label. Could you please email me a pic of your label. I have the 25lb bag and it doesn’t show pumpkins and it sounds as though pumpkins require more than squash. kmccarrier@msn.com

Getting tissue tests back I've found out that leaf application can correct these low nutrients fast!
Love um!!

Good idea Hobbit to go with lower ppm when doing foliar, that way you can also apply more often. One of the products I’m using, recommends foliar application at 1/4 strength of fertigation method.

Southern AG Spreader Sticker about $36.00 a gallon 1 Teaspoon to a gallon of water with whatever else you have in that gallon. You can google it and find it for purchase online. I have used it the past couple of years.

What EC is safe for foliar application without risking burn from the salts? My patch has been through 3 complete floodings and has had an average of .25 inches per day for every day in May. I have my plant high and dry and is looking good considering all the wet, cold weather this spring. I figure most of my nutrients washed out with the flood water, so I will be doing supplemental foliar feeding. My first time foliar so I have a lot to learn. Pointers appreciated.

When using TKO by Growth Products do not use a Spreader Sticker with TKO. I have not used any other products so far that say not to use a spreader sticker with them.
