Now that I have your attention , How many people read the heavy hitters diaries as there are useful tips in his and others . The big kahuna , Joze and other soil people are also helpful. Who searches the site for info before asking a question ? Do you look at general discussion only or do you read any others? Actually surfing the whole site might prove beneficial especially for the new growers. Okay , rant is done!

I thoroughly read and enjoy this site. This site has everything right here. I almost always look for the answer first. If I can’t find it I ask. And yes since I have learned who all the heavy hitters are I read everything they have to say. I never did have the opportunity to have a mentor like some do. Even though there were AG growers around here their knowledge was extremely limited. Sure they knew how to pollinate and grow one pumpkin per plant but that was about it. None of them knew anything about this site, nor genetics, walking boards covering the pumpkins getting a soil test. I could go on and on. Everything I’ve learned has come from all you growers here. So I guess your all my mentors. I thank you all for that. Now that I hold the North Dakota AG record with a 1921.5 lbs. I need to learn more from all of you so I can break 2000 lbs this year.

I have an idea, but I'm keeping it to myself, until after I grow the WR with an old seed because of it, lol. It'll be cool to win the Old Seed Contest as well! Then, ironically, I'll have to use my winnings to buy a new pumpkin trailer for my future biggies. awww...eg

Yea hobbit, all you new guys growing these monsters right off the get go, like Q-Tip and mobymike, are just a disappointment if your not up near 3000 pounds this season...not sayin there’s pressure or anything...I’m just sayin...and yes, so grateful to all of you that continue to share your ride with the rest of us through your diaries...so much to learn...so fun to watch, especially when there is a big one on the line....good luck to Ron W this year...looks like he’s getting serious...I’m gonna go get on the ol lady’s case to get the garden tilled....good luck everyone...

I cruised all the heavy hitter diaries pretty thoroughly when I was starting. My patch work has yet to catch up to all the great knowledge I've read. Excited to see Patons + CO2. That seems like winning combo.

Hobbit is a very good example of a person that uses this whole site like a gold mine. By searching you might find answers, change your question or have even more . But this all helps people become better informed and maybe the next heavy hitter

I am with Bubba on this one. Some people enjoy learning the history of a sport/hobby and others are just interested in the score.

bnot, I hope that one of these years I become a heavy hitter. I look at each year the way I’ve seen it posted here about one season. Bubba touched on it. “this isn’t a 100 yard dash go slow and easy”. As long as there’s progress I’m happy. There’s not only so much more to learn from this site, there’s still so much I’ve learned here to implement. Let’s face it, this is a expensive hobby. Heck I can’t even afford heating cables, or an elaborate watering system. So, I have to improvise or make do without, like I’m sure many other growers are doing.

To those growers that are just beginning. Like spudder said there’s a wealth of information here use it learn from it. And like baitman said some info is old and out dated. Often you’ll find two or more different answers, I personally go with the majority and those that have the most experience. One more thing, Be aware of some information that’s posted. I’m not going to mention names but there’s one in particular that’ll be the first to throw out answers to your question that could possibly ruin your whole season. Dont run out and do things to your plants with the first answer. Wait till the very knowledgeable jump in and you’ll find your answer.

I think Hobbit and Dustin are going to be great for this site. One discussion it was stated that you could be a heavy hitter by more than just growing big. By the way , I was just poking fun at myself by calling it a rant.

Hands down Kent (Hobbit) is one of the most helpful and generous growers in the hobby and is definitely going to be considered a heavy hitter this year.

If you want to be a Heavy Hitter you better have deep pockets.

Here is that quote from Don Langeven's book.
"There are many growers who are deserving of the distinction of Heavy Hitter, and therefore, it was not easy choosing those who are presented here. About a hundred growers were considered for the distinction and in the final analysis, it came down to sheer weight as the most important factor----after all this is not a beauty contest. In my first book How to grow world class giant pumpkins, a great deal of attention was paid to the people who contribute to the well being of the sport. Very little of that occurs here, but it is nice to report, that all of the heavy hitters in this edition are role models for the new growers based on their willingness to help anyone sincerely interested in growing a giant."

Lots of false info on all public forums & lot of generalizations.
Define deep pockets? In my definition I don't have deep pockets.Never have however I dont smoke or drink, So I save about $100 a week from a lot of growers who I see at the Big SHOW like to PARTY!! Nothing wrong with that,Just saying 100$ a week for smokes & booze or whatever? leaves me 5 grand a year to spend on the patch. No deep pockets just different priorities here.I drink water now mostly saving another $2-3 a day.Hard work grows big pumpkins & ambition.Step away from the recliner & put down the DOOBIE ! LOL

One thing I think you do well Bubba, is add value to your gardening by including your grandson. Work ethic, planning ahead, keeping records... these are all powerful things to be teaching a young child, and as a bonus, you get to have fun too.
April 15 is coming up... perhaps some of that 5k could be filed under a Jack's deductible donation? :)

spudder or anyone...I use info I find here a lot, but have problems with using proper prompt in the site search box. For instance if I don't know the mix rate for Azos I type in Azos rate and get nothing. Any suggestions as to how I modify my input? Thanx Yeah I am a computer dummy!!! Peace, Wayne

The bigpumpkins.com search function is hit or miss. If I really want to find some information, I use a site specific google search. Go to google and type in "site:bigpumpkins.com *search term*" and you'll get more hits.
For example, searching for "Azos rate" on this page gets this thread, searching google for "site:bigpumpkins.com azos rate" gets you 4 pages worth of hits. Still no guarantee you'll find what you're looking for, but I find the google search to be generally more useful.

Thanks for the tip cjb . We both just learned something Peace,Wayne. Wayne ,sometimes less is more and other times when I am searching one thing will lead to another which can end up giving a search that gives me what I was looking for in the first place. Is that clear as mud ? B2 , the only thing I can think of that you might be doing is copy and pasting to site search instead of the page headliner at the top of the screen . If you are having trouble copying put your pointer over the link and left click fairly fast till it turns blue, then right click and copy(thank to I believe it was pumpkinpal for that tip).

Wayne ,here is one that I got by just putting in azos only and there was at least one other . Very little seems to be the suggestions but very little specifics. Don't forget , if you can't find what you are looking for , ask to make sure you get it correct.(in this case I would ask)
