I was just wondering who the first members of BP.com were that are still here and posting. A lot of growers have come and gone but how many of those earliest members are still here and still posting? And maybe even still gardening?

4 wives, 11 step kids +1 now of my own, 8 patch builds (although moved the dirt from one to another a couple times), first giant pumpkin seed in the ground in 1988, first AG in 1993, still growin' and postin', just not as active as I used to be here on BP.com

Great post, Marv. Far from a first member, but it was interesting to go back an have a look at my beginning. The "site search" function in the upper right corner of the webpage allows one to search by username, reporting instances dating back to inception?
My first post was 11/26/2001:

There are several growers (including myself) that were active on the ‘Mallorn List’ which predated Bigpumpkins.com and are still here today but posting less frequently. The earliest contribution I made to BP that I can document was on 8/1/2000, http://www.bigpumpkins.com/ViewArticle.asp?id=37&gid=4

WOW!! I was on Mallorn in 1998. I can't believe it. I saw names of people that I knew well back then including Marvin Hicks, Larry Checkon, Joe Pukos, Don Langevin, and many, man more. I had forgotten Mallorn.com I was posting under the name lubadub back then. Thank you Joe Ailts for having a much better memory than mine. You made my day.

I am still amazed by how many names of growers, some still growing, were on the list back in 1997. Al Eaton was in the group very early. Also Ray Waterman who still goes by the handle "lgourd." I am not certain why Mallorn.com ever ended and most of the growers came over to this site.

It is amazing to see how the pumpkin weights and growing techniques have changed since the beginning of this site. Yet many growers are still here from the earliest days. Bp.com has really been a great tool to promote the sport and it may be the biggest reason why the pumpkin weights have reached such heights.

Howard Dill came up with the Atlantic Giant variety of pumpkin in 1979. His seeds went on sale shortly thereafter. My wife bought an envelope with his seeds containing a one page info sheet on how to grow them back in either 1980 or 1981 at the Eastern States Fair in Massachusetts. The price was either $2.00 or $5.00 for five seeds in the envelope. I started growing them that growing season I believe in 1981.

I believe that Don Langevin and his pumpkin books were the greatest influence on giant pumpkins. Ray Waterman and his Pumpkin Confederation and weigh-offs in New York with the first 1000 pound pumpkin contributed mightedly. Then came the New England Pumpkin Growers who were the beginning of the GPC.

My diaries start in 2002. I love looking at the old ones and pics of my kids. I got my start from finding Don Langevins book at our local Agway... then found Joel Hollands videos and a trip to Ray Watermans to witness a weigh off with fellow grower Dyberry Patch Andy and our then 7 year olds and we were hooked and had to give it a try... and still trying to give it a try.
