Nitrogen enthusiasts-
Those who requested a copy of my early season nitrogen application calculator got a beta version. Over the last week, i've made some improvements to help users navigate it more intuitively, including instructions for use and a cleaner layout for entering your data.
For those planning to use this tool, I ask that you keep a record of your square footage per plant for the first 7 weeks of the season. I would like to establish averages for plant size by week.
Further, this is a model for nitrogen application, not a prescription. Big difference there. A model is an idea based on assumptions. A prescription is known amounts based on past experiences with predictable outcomes. I'd love to refine this model into a prescription someday. Your use of this tool along with feedback will help refine the model.
Along the lines of assumptions, I modeled plant growth over the first 7 weeks of the season to develop a rough estimate of the amount of product needed to satisfy the volume requirements.
A plant that grows to roughly 300sq ft by the first week in June will require about 5.2 ounces of product.
28% UAN is commonly sold in 2.5 gallon jugs from farmer Co-ops. Price is reasonable. You can also find 32oz package sizes from garden/turf retail locations. So long as you dont allow the product to freeze overwinter, it will last for many seasons.
I encourage those of you who asked for a copy of my spreadsheet to reach out again for the updated version. Will be much easier to use.
