            | benny_p | Germany | I want to start 4-6 plants of my 905 Preis ( 833* Razo x self) in one patch and hopefully get one true green. Is it possible to decide pumkin/ squash before the flowers appear (for example green/yellow vine : pumkin) ?A true green squash must have a green female (esp. flower stem ) ?

And even when you see a flower, it is likely (but not a sure thing) that if the female flower's bulge seems green (rather than yellow) that it will mature to be a squash. Your best bet is to just start with a seed that had green parents, then watch the females. If they are green too, it's likely they'll stay green to maturity.

            | LIpumpkin | Long Island,New York | There are exceptions to every "rule", however my observations indicate that a yellow or yellow and green vine is a really really bad sign if you want a squash. A green vine doesn't make me any more comfortable for a squash however, as they do both. A green female under the flower can change color to yellow....while a yellow bulb under the flower would make me pull the plant if I wanted a squash. If its green after 10 days its a good sign....if it starts to get green-yellow or a pale white then you wont know til you pick it...and its not a good sign if you want a true green squash at harvest..thats my experience and I can only offer my experience...good luck Benny......G | 1/1/2009 3:57:53 PM |

            | mid | Reed Point Montana | from my experience growing my first squash this year is that a dark green vine, the darker the female the better and and long green stem is the best bet for a true greenie | 1/8/2009 9:40:28 PM |
