I picked up some off the rack seeds (Ferry Morse) the other day to compare to some seeds somebody sent me and the package seeds are noticeably smaller and some are paler.
The seeds from a 505 somebody sent me are bigger and more consistent in color

Its not the apearence of the seeds thats important. Its the genetics within.those store bought seeds dont have any wheres near the potential for size as do those 505's do.If your goal is to grow the biggest pumpkin possible then use seed that growers send you.

I tried the Ferry Morse seeds last year and I did not have great results. Also, I just threw them in the ground but that's a different story. I would definately plant the 505 seed. I am only planting seeds I got from some generous growers next year. Check out the site too there is alot of great info to help you.

I'm using the off the rack seeds as test seeds.
The other seeds are the ones I want to put in the garden.

I planted the Ferry Morse last year too but the deer ate all the pumpkins on it and drought did not help either.
I got the seeds before I found this great website
They may not be great seeds but it just was not a good year for growing giant pumpkins.

KRC, don't waste a square foot on store seed. I have been there done that long ago. Make a squirrel happy on those store seeds and plant the good stuff foks on here have worked hard to provide. This will be your year, use the best you got. Good luck friend.

Thanks
I assume the store seed has no good genetics?
(just asking)
I plan on using the 'good' seeds I have in the garden
Thanks for the kind words Alex
