I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1385 Jutras at the California Growers Meeting this past weekend. I think it will be the '07 seed that everyone will be looking for next fall and winter. What's your best bet on what the new "un-obtainable seed" will be after the '08 growing season?

I like the 1385 Jutras also. but My favorite is the 1010 Daletas,(998 Pukos X 898 Knauss) I'm seriously thinking of growing both and crossing them

If you have been following the auctions the 1041 seems to be near the top of hot seeds.

As always, it depends on what seeds see dirt. Too many good crosses out there to say. The next hot seed will be whatever grows the largest pumpkin this year.

I still dont think the 1502 has been proven to its max potential. This year I can probably name a dozen growers putting it in,and that is just the ones I know. I am sure this one will see probably 50 patches in 08. That is how the "BIG" seeds come about.THey get planted alot, period. Next thing you know they are sought after and getting scarce because many people grew it.
Look at the 898 Knauss phenomenon. Unkown seed, grown by a virtually unkown grower - Dave Larsen. He grows one monster fruit ( I think it was 1156 or 1162) that went WAY over chart. Okay.. Knauss 898 becomes known but still is very attainable. It isnt until the following year EVERYONE plants it and nearly all the fruit go way over the charts. Instant hot seed, price goes from 75 bucks at auctions to well over 200 bucks..
I reiiterate, the 1502 is THE hot seed next offseason.

Well put Rocky, as a matter of fact, you've done a number of great crosses that could be THE next hot seed but somehow you've got to get 50 or 60 great growers to go out there and prove it for you....then everyone would want to grow it.
A slippery slope and that is why there are so many great genetic crosses that have been done that likely won't get enough soil to be "proven".

I agree with 1350 and 1110 Wallace. 1180 Pukos may not be far behind.

the 1385 seems to have all it takes to make a great seed. the 1207 young also appears to have a lot of potential. some unmentioned seeds are the 1566 and 1161 Rodonis, the 1445 Marsh (1407x695), and the 1556 Werner. All of those look great on paper. Furthermore, I believe that the 1445 and 1556 are good because they have no 1068 Wallace in their backgrounds. That is a good contribution to genetic diversity, which I fear has become of too little concern within our community.

Lots of good seeds already mentioned, with probably 1385 at the top of the 'potential' list. Another that I think rivals it for potential that has not been mentioned is 1462 Gibson. (998x1068). Alan 'knows a few' heavy hitters in the valley and elsewhere who won't need much of an excuse to plant one of his seeds. (Seed with potential + HH connections = results.) Others...1317 Rose (1370 x 998) 1265 Howard (1229 Platte x 1231 Pukos) And, of the Michigan 07 seed stock, almost any of Chad Swarts' crosses...1174, 1106, 1264, 1248, 1031* to name a few. I know 802 Kurilich is shaping up as the Michigan color seed of choice and 549.5* Wells on the green side... (but those are not 07 seeds.) Frank
