A 946.5 GeertZ X 898 Knauss, today......or should I be looking forward and crossing the 898 with a 1689, 1502, or Steltz super bomber?......look forward not backwards???

I think both could work. Since new seeds and old seeds rarely get planted side-by-side in the same environments its hard to say that all the newer seeds are better. I don't really buy into the hybrid vigor theories any more. I think its a case of selection. It would be fun to see what some of the older top seeds could do aginst the newer top seeds. If I remember correctly a couple years ago the old 825 Shymanski grew Eddy Z's biggest pumpkin, up aginst some of todays top seeds.

It could be good, in that it would be unique. Do it if you think you will plant the result, because likely only you will want to try it. Then if it does well, then...

Wiz, I don't know about the 946.5 Gerts. One cross you may want to consider is the 664.5 Liggett X 898 Knauss. I think that could be a good one.

Wiz, if ya want to try old x new I had 2 crosses done like that. One being 1367.5 Rose x 946.5 Gertz and the other 805 Pukos x 887 Orr. I like old x new, unless ya got the wallet to buy all the hot seeds better off trying to build your own. Ken

PS. We had 2 946 and a guy germing them that has all the resourses to get it done, one was a dud the other would never really take off or set fruit. Old seeds are real iffy. Ken

Wiz I would, in a heart beat, I like the old and new mix, and as PA punkin said the good old 825 did great for me, and we are going to grow it again because we also have the 562 Rose, sure hope it germinates, but if it don't I'm going to cross it with the 772 Poirier, or 919 Richards or 802 Kurlich, or something along that line. My line of thinking is if you make a cross and 5 others have made the same one, you better be the heaviest or the only person that will plant it is you, A totally different cross will at least make a few people think, And absolutely cross the 1689 X 898, very few 898's out there, actually make all those crosses, LOL Eddy

My thoughts exactly Eddy, one thing that seems to be consistent is the major part the 898 has played in the line of heavies. The 1689 X 898 is a must do, and I also like the 1502 X 898, I wish I had more dirt...but I am thinking the 898 plant (germination successful) will play mother to 2-3 fruit as I not planning on it setting a state record, but it could provide the seeds for one.......on paper....lol
898 X 1689 898 X 1041 898 X 1502 898 X 1407 898 X 1075 .......Oh the possibilities
Not a flower will go to waste.......

From home of the 609 Fawcett'07(1450 Wallace[1068 x sib] X 737 Fawcett[827 Holland'92 x self) ...keeping in mind the 737 is the current SC state record... Hell Ya!! PS. Ken, that 805 x 887 sounds like a good pollinator too.

Do the 1407 X 898, and I would be very interested. I don't know why, but that really looks good to me.
Maybe it's because each of those appears to be an "outlier"...

Ah, yes, when I said 1407 X 898 I was thinking the 1407 Wolf.
For what it's worth, I'd suggest 898 X Self...
