All of my test germinations show that my plants in miracle gro potting mix are taller with bigger leaves but the plants in Pro Mix starter soil look stockier and healthier but the leaves aren't quite as big. After the first week I'd say the pro mix plants were off to a better start but after the second week the miracle gro plants grew faster. I know everything was already root bound at this point. Just wanted to share my observations and see what everyone uses to get seeds going. I will be using 1 gallon nursery pots once it gets real. Haha pictures on my diary Jay(2)

Jay, from what little I know...after the first week your plants should be in the ground, so judging them in the starting pots at that time frame is not a good comparison. JMHO Peace, Wayne Miracle Gro is loaded w/stuff that prbly isn't in the patch! I use Pro Mix.

I like the clear cup idea. Do you put that cup in a Solid color cup? It's nice to be able to see the roots in the trials. What mix gave the better root system?

I realize the cups are to small but just wanting to see if I could see a difference in the two growing mediums I tried. I pulled the plants for the compost pile and all were pretty well root bound. No surprise there. Probably can't go wrong with either mix but was wondering what others used.

Just be sure their are no fertilizers in whatever starter mix you decide on, or the tiny roots can burn. I learned the hard way a few years back.

My first year I went with miracle grow and a window sill for light. I got thin leggy plants that wanted to flop over. Last year I went with pro mix with biofungicide and an inexpensive seed starting light from walmart. I had nice stocky short plants.
