Hello all, can anyone tell me what the correct way is to position seeds when planting? Do they go upright with the pointy end up or horizontal or something different?

Pointy end down works nicely :-)

If you do the pointy end down then when it sprouts it will come straight up without shedding the sead cover, right? You need to plant the seed so that when it sprouts and starts pusing up that it will help shed the sead coat, right?

I often have to help the seedlings shed their shell- about 50% of the time I gently pry it off the cots of the just emerged plant. The shells break right in two with very little force.

I put them at a 45 degree, this helps with the seed cover coming off.

I started all of mine pointy end down and only one of them came strait up. Most of them rotated themselves before they emerged and one actually shed the seed coat before it even left the dirt. To me it logically seems like it would help the plant along by having the root going in the correct direction when it sprouts rather than having it come out sideways and then have to rotate downward. If you file the edges of your seeds before you plant you shouldn't have any issues with shedding the seed coat.

I'm with Matt, I start them flat...then the first root pulls the pointy end down and the rest will be upright and emerges easily from the soil.
Don't try and pry off the seed too quickly...you can make a mistake rather quickly that way.
