I understand the starting part but WHEN do I start them? I live in Michigan.

It's hard to say without knowing what part of Michigan you live in. But here in Southern lower, the last frost date is May 17th. I usually soak my seeds on April 27th to get them to germinate by April 29th. Then try to get them in the ground in a week or so.

However, if you're further north, you may want to use a bigger starting pot. In case you need to put them out during the day and bring them in at night for an extra week or two. From Flint and north, I know it can still be too cold the first and even the second week of May.

Starting your plant will depend on what type of seeds and the maturity cycle. Giant Pumpkins 120 days shooting for the first week of September for the fairs and other events, and giving them curing time. That would mean the last of April or first of May.

Using a pot or bucket with a min. of 12 inches of soil depth. If you cut the bottom out and make a break in the side of a 5 gal bucket so it can be split easy transplant should be easy enough.
