Has anybody tried starting seeds in brown paper grocery bags? Just a thought. Any input as to pros and cons will be appreciated.

Pappy,

I use 4" peat pots and by the time their ready to set out in the garden, they're already starting to fall apart. Don't know how long those bags would hold up when wet, I don't think they'd last.

Pappy,

Do you mean like a pot with soil in it?
Or the paper in layers like paper towels?

As a pot, I agree they'd get too wet & fall apart.

Pappy....I like those ice cream gallon round boxes. They are more fun to empty. I told my wife I needed about two dozen, of them, by April fifteenth. How else am I going to get that much ice cream in stock? :)

Pappy heres one I tried last year...got a tomato cage and inverted the spikes back to the first circle and used newspaper to form the bottom Pot...sprayed it down and let it set in shape...then filled with potting soil...The cage gave it enough outside rigidity to move around....but the spikes forming the bottom crossed dead center. was something I played with but was to worried that leaving the wire cage around and planting might inhibit the stump.I would let the seedling get leggy but even after building up the sides with potting soil I saw no proof that they rooted anywhere along the stem just that the roots started where they would have. even tried to apply root hormone to the extra long stems and burying it to the cotes still no extra root growth when I opened it up to check.

Fill up a brown paper bag with potting soil, even double it and see how long it lasts... I would think it would last about a week or two...

I was thinking about using hair nets as something to keep the bags in some form. Double up on the bags, fill them with seed starting soil, and place them in two gal. pots. When it is time to transplant just pick up the hair net and gently place them in the prepared hole. I don't know. I guess I will try it. Thanks for your advice all!
