Its been colder than usely spring for us in so ca, I normaly dont worry about temp- the days are now getting warm but nights are about 52 for a low ,, question is do the new seedlings need protection or is 52 ok < ?

52 will slow them down but it won't kill them. Erect a well vented cloche & be patient. You know how it goes...when it rains it pours. Soon we'll be complaining it's too hot. LOL
Growers around here use small space heaters &/or light bulbs to warm the inside of thei cloches.

This is a similar dilemma for me. I'm keeping them in their pots as long as I can. Personally I'd be terrified to put an electric heater outside but I know people do it.

AG pumpkins hardly grow below 70°......and do not grow below 60°. If you want your plant to grow optimally, you will do whatever it takes to make it happen. Just how bad do you want a big pumpkin?

I think the weather will be good from here out, Its now 55* for a low ,& new plants seem to be growing good so far !!

I would love 55 for a night time low, it was 28 degrees outside at 6:00 AM this morning!
