Would someone please repeat how to tell what direction the first main will grow from a seedling?

dave, it usually falls like that... but last year my main vine feel directly over the first true leaf... but after it falls u can always train it in the direction that u want.

hey, perhaps someone could try this--i've a week to go before starting my own--the joel holland video states the main vine generally will be going the same direction as the first true leaf---perhaps try planting at a 45-degree angle,
tilted in the soil....then all the vines will go the same way to a degree; as long as the main goes the way you want it to, then later you can adjust/train the others---i'll try it on one of mine, but you guys are a week or two ahead.....hope it works if you try it---pumpkinpal....

Mine useually go close to the same direction as the first true leaf... I then "Gradually encourage" it to go where I want...
