For planting seed, does it matter if it horizontal or vertical, tip up or down? I never thought of it. I naturally plant it vertical with the tip up. I am starting to doubt. I think it should be the tip down because that is the root. Correct?

You are correct with your last statement. Tip down works best...Chris

If you want the seedling to come up without the shell, you can try to put it horizontal. It worked for me (after pre-germinating the seed). A shell that still covers the seedling can cause damage to it.

I plant the seeds flat in the ground as well.

Check out this sites, "How to" section, there you will find the answers you seek. Or e-mail a master (Len Stelphflug) sorry if I spelled your name wrong Len it's late here... I think as long as the temp, humidity, and care level are there germination will occure...

Plant your seeds "flat" about 1 to 1.5 inches deep and they will almost always emerge leaving the seed casing in the ground. The main root will go down regardless of how you place the seed in the ground.

The heavy hitters (D. Langevin and others) go with point down to maximize the energy the seeds has to grow up and out.
