out of my gourd

I finally got a chance to start my seeds this morning. I lightly sanded them and then soaked them in hydrogen peroxide.Three hours later I checked on them and 4 of the 10 had the root peeking out the bottom of the seed.Is this unusual and does fast seed start mean a more vigorous plant? Two of the plants are backups but I might have to change my mind on them if they are going to be a fast growing plant. The seeds are 967 Lancaster,1139 Richards,1058 Papez and 926 Hunt.Any input appreciated.Thanks.

I've never had one germinate in less then 2 days, but maybe more experienced growers have seen this. That's pretty fast.

My 926 Hunt sprouted roots in less than a day, but not as fast as yours. I soaked it for about 2 hours and put them in a paper towel. Next morning they were sprouting roots. None of my other seeds have any sign of life yet.

The peroxide was under the heat lamps so approximately 80 to 85 degrees.I used straight 3% hydrogen peroxide,no diluting.I use an old 48 inch heat lamp, the kind restaurants use to keep food warm with.It ranges from 80 to 85 degrees.

I did the advanced seed starting method, put them in baggies on top of the fridge, and left for the weekend. I did this on Thursday night, when I got home on Saturday afternoon, all four germinated, and had over 1 inch roots. My 812 Landry had over a 2 inch root.

April 30th. I soaked them in Hydrogren peroxide / water/ seaweed extract mixture, I checked on them april 30th
at 5pm roughly 13 hours later and all had the root shooting out of the seed. all were transplanted into there ice cream containers and all broke soil this afternoon May 2nd.

so do we think that if we leave the seeds in the hydrogen peroxide for long enough they will sprout? perhaps a warmed-up, 85-degrees mix of 3% H2O2 and seaweed could be the nitro mix we are looking for. hmmmmmm.....
time to experiment! eg

I believe all forms, of seaweed and kelp is an additive, to seed soaking that makes sense. Natural growth promoters helping to wake them up.

I never tried alfalfa tea but that would be using a comparable soaking product. The growth hormones in alfalfa is slightly different that the hormones found in kelp. Good non the less.

I was thinking like you Eric.
Why don't we just leave seeds in the hydrogen peroxide intil they sprout. Any reasons not to???

I'd be happy right now with ANY germination!
My tests always work perfect but my good seeds are
nerve wrackers!

It looks like some seeds left in liquid till they sprout, will break apart. One of mine did this, where the cotyledons separated. The seed is shot. Lucky for me, it was just a backup.

perhaps diluting the Hy-Per by 50% with H20 may alleviate
the seed-destruction problem---i was intending to experiment last night, but after two hours fixing the
riding mower i was "bushed", lol....
every top seed i am germinating this year is taking an extra DAY to come up---could be the Bio-Grow Endo Plus
in the seed-starting mix, but they are fine once they do come up, so do not despair, Kuerbis Mike!

pumpkinpal,
Temperature seems to be good now about 86 degrees but my seed starting mix is not good. It gets too hard. I'll have to buy some good stuff.

Good news is that roots are coming out of my most important peat pots and I am loosening up the soil over the seeds to help them push out more easily.

I was able to get the seed coat off the 869.5 Calai an hour ago and have her under a grow lamp. I hope the cots open up and turn green today!
Talk to ya later and thanks!

oooooooooh, 869.5.....oooooooh!
lol-0-0-----just the weigh it worked out,
because i had "committed" myself to growing
a few seeds based on "agreements" with a few growers,
i am not planting the 869.5. just plain ran out of room, now out of time. well, there will be next year. good luck!!!

Doug14...That's happened to me before as well but the seed didn't "sprout". What happened is you just separated it from the shell as in the advanced seed starting method except without the hassle of doing it manually. You shoulda put it in the dirt and let it it alone, it could've germinated, mine did.

Hmm...hydrogen peroxide turns your hair blond, cleans your contact lenses...much more I think...is it really good to grow a plant in? Good question Eng6900.
I´ll stay with my "old fashioned" fish tank bubbler anyway :)

Floh,
The seedlings that came out from my hydrogen peroxide soaked seeds look terrible! I will not try that ever again!
Last year I used salpeter to soak the seeds and it worked perfect.
You were right pal...at least in my case...

The plants should all end up alright though but the damaged cots are slowing them from getting a good start. My main pumpkins from the first batch are doing fine in the greenhouses though at least.

I've heard a few times that the worse looking plants sometimes end up growing the biggest pumpkins in the patch so I still have hope for the latest seedlings.
They include 895 Hester, 552 Sherwood, 495 Reiss, 763 Biss (dead), 713 Sherwood, Beachy 10, 808 D.Beachy

Later!
