Anything after august 1st gets weedwhacked in my garden. The weeds are out of control by that point and I am just trying to get sun to my plants leaves. It is a game changer and you retain the benefit of preventing soil erosion by keeping live plant roots in between your rows. You are correct the way it spins is important I weed whack up to and around my plants and I make sure to have the clippings fly away from the plant. It takes some practice because how the angle you keep the head at will accentuate the way it throws and clears the clippings. If you keep the head perfectly level you wont be able to direct the clippings properly, I angle mine with the head slightly down and slightly to the left. You will figure out what works for you if you play with the head angle etc.

I've done my share of weedwhacking so I sorta know what you mean. I'm surprised you use one. But yeah its like 'good luck' hoeing out established pigweed. I just need to grind it down to ground level, then the first frost will kill the rest of it soon.

I have a stihl electric one which I think will do a clever job it cuts very well but doesnt shoot debris out so fast.
