A lot of the newer gourd seeds have John Niewenhoff's genetics. From his 140 many years back. He crossed a pecan seeded type gourd with a English/Westfall type that is a smaller seed with out corky ridges. The type I have been growing are from the old English/Westfall type gourds. THey tend to be dark green with out a snout. I think the snout and lighter color came from the pecan seeded types. Maybe they had some giant pear gourd genes in them. There is a guy on here Named Harry Hurley (H3 on BP) who has years and years of knowledge and experience. Not sure if he is still around or not. There are some good conversations to be found in the Bushel gourd forum message boards about the different types and genes.

Interesting. At this rate, I might know more about gourds than I do about anything else. Your 263.5 does have a snout btw, so somehow those genes did get in.

I think Steve Connolly said the snout can get "absorbed back in" as it grows. I am seeing that happen on the 243 Brown bushel gourd.

I think Steve didn't see that happen very much on his WR...
