I tried letting mine go and basically got smaller tomatoes, lots of foliage, and no megas. But that was with basic genetics and average soil. One rule of thumb to consider is that if a vine tip doesnt produce a mega (once it switches to dinky singles) then it probably wont produce a mega further up. It might under certain favorable conditions, but the rule of thumb is that it will continue to make dinky singles. So, it may be better to decapitate them when they switch to singles and then watch for a good one on the side suckers instead. ...In my experience this gives good odds.

But, I'm sure this all depends on the soil and genetics. And luck.
