Yeah the heirlooms melt down quickly in heat and humidity. THey have no disease tolerance whatsoever. THey sure do taste good if you can get a few to ripen on healthy plants though. Gurneys used to sell a couple nice heirloom crosses They did a 'Carbon' X 'better boy' that was quite a bit better than the straight 'carbon' variety, I am not sure if it is still available though.
